Okinawa Peace Memorial Park

Okinawa Peace Memorial Park is located on a hill overlooking the sea in Okinawa Battle Site National Park, and the symbol of the park is the “Tower of Peace,” a symbol of hope for lasting peace.

The park is also home to the National Okinawa War Cemetery, the Cornerstone of Peace, Reimei no To, memorials and peace memorials by prefecture of origin in Japan, and auxiliary facilities such as ceremony sites and parking lots.

Adjacent to the park are the Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum and the Okinawa Peace Memorial Hall.

The Peace Memorial Park is located on a plateau overlooking the hills of Mabuni, Itoman City in the southern part of the main island, “the place where the Battle of Okinawa ended,” to the south, and the steep and beautiful coastline to the southeast.

The development of the park began during the Ryukyuan government era and was fully developed as an urban park in 1972, after the Ryukyu Islands were returned to Japan.

The park includes the Peace Memorial Museum, which displays photographs and artifacts from the Battle of Okinawa; the Cornerstone of Peace, on which the names of all those who died in the Battle of Okinawa are engraved; the Peace Statue, which prays for the repose of the dead and eternal peace; and the National War Cemetery and 50 memorials erected by prefectures and organizations on the hilltop of Mabuni Hill.

The park is a sacred place and a key tourist attraction, visited by many people, including domestic and foreign tourists, memorial groups, and students on school excursions.

On holidays, many families visit the park to enjoy ball games, picnics, and recreation on the large lawn.
