Sunayama Beach, with its unique landscape created by nature, is one of the most representative beaches in Miyakojima, along with Maehama Beach.
It is regularly ranked among the top beaches on word-of-mouth websites in Japan.
Located on the west coast of Miyako Island, about a 15-minute drive north of Hirara City, the beach is crowded with tourists and locals during the season because of its easy accessibility, which can also be reached by bicycle.
From the parking lot, as the name “Sand Mountain” implies, you climb up a large sand mountain and for the first time you can see the beautiful beach below the mountain.
On the left side of the beach, there is a natural rock arch with a large blowhole hole created by wave erosion.
Although the beach is only 70 meters wide, it is surrounded by Ryukyu limestone rocks and green mountains, and is a beautiful sight rich in landforms that nature has created over a long period of time.
The fine white powdery sand is not only beautiful, but also tickles the soles of your feet when you walk barefoot.
The tides are swift, so be careful when swimming.
On windy days, powerful waves can be seen.
