Ishigaki Yaimamura is an open-air museum centering on old houses, and is also a theme park located at the southernmost and westernmost tip of Japan. This interactive theme park recreates the good old Yaeyama houses.
Ishigaki Yaima Village is adjacent to the Ramsar wetland, Nagura Ampal, where you can see mangroves on the wooden deck, and many other living creatures such as the red-footed booby, Okinawa box turtle, southern flying goby (Tontonmy), and the semaru box turtle, a natural treasure.
In the park, old houses from the Yaeyama Islands have been relocated and preserved, and in each house you can experience various things such as playing the sanshin (Okinawan traditional three-stringed instrument), coloring shisa, making sata undergee, and taking pictures in Ryukyu costumes.
There is also a buffalo pond, a crested serpent eagle conservation gauge, and a squirrel monkey park. At the squirrel monkey park, you can feed the monkeys with special food sold in the park, so be sure to visit.
