Nisshudo Cave

Sacred Cave of the Legend of Takigami, the God of Waterfalls Who Slayed a Giant Serpent

Legend has it that Nisshu Shonin vanquished a giant snake. This cave is located on the grounds of Kanamu Kannon-ji Temple, and is a bellows cave with a total length of about 270 meters.

It is also the site where “Kanamu Gongen (Kumano Sansho Gongen)” and “Suitengen” are enshrined.

In the past, Nisshu Shonin, who had trained himself at Koyasan, left Kumano for the Pure Land and drifted ashore at Tomizozu (now Fukka) in Kanamu.

He then built Kinmu Kannonji Temple here. At that time, he enshrined Kumano Sansho Gongen and built Kanamu Gongen Shrine in the bell milk cave of Nisshudo.

The Kannyu-do in the cave is still growing, but the large hall section at the back of the cave is off-limits to visitors for the protection of the natural environment. Please use good manners when entering the cave.
