Cape Hedo

The northernmost point of the main island of Okinawa, overlooking Yoron Island, the edge of Yanbaru where rough waves break

Yanbaru is located in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa. Cape Heto is located at the northernmost tip of Okinawa Island, at the northern end of Yanbaru.

From this location, you can see Izena Island and Iheya Island to the west, and Yoron Island and Okinoerabu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture to the north. On the ocean surface, rough waves from the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean break on the sharp coral rocks.

During the American occupation, a wolf-whistle was raised from here in hope for the return of the island to the mainland, and exchange meetings with the mainland were held once a year between the island and Yoronjima.

Today, the “Monument for the Struggle for the Return of Japan to the Fatherland” and the “Monument of Friendship between Yoronjima and Kunigami Village” are erected here.

Also, on the north side of “Kayauchi Banta,” a cliff on the southwest side leading to the cape, there is a world-class underwater limestone cave, “Cape Hendo Dome,” which is also known as a diving spot.
