Kouri Island is a small island surrounded by emerald green waters a short distance from the main island of Okinawa, and is famous as the “Island of Love. It is also called “God’s Island” because of the myth of the birth of mankind, which is handed down in a myth similar to the legend of Adam and Eve.
In 2005, the Kouri Bridge was opened, making it possible to visit the island by car. From the bridge, you will feel as if you are driving on the sea.
The Kouri Circle Line allows visitors to drive around the island, which has a circumference of about 8 kilometers, in about 10 minutes. Many people enjoy swimming and snorkeling in summer at spots such as Kouri Beach, Heart Rock, and the Tokei Beach pothole (a group of cylindrical hollow landforms).
Surrounded by a lagoon and the open ocean, the circular plateau-shaped island with a highest point of 107 meters is a mysterious place with old ritual events and the legend of the birth of mankind, the Okinawan version of Adam and Eve.
The island’s specialties are sea urchins and mozuku seaweed cultivated by sea urchin fishing and mozuku cultivation, and sugar cane and red potatoes grown by crop cultivation.
